US Exports and Chinese FDI: Impact on US Jobs

Wednesday, July 10, 2024 - 2:30pm to 3:30pm US ET

Please join US-China Business Council (USCBC) for a virtual event open to the public analyzing trends in US exports to China and Chinese investment in the United States.

China is a leading market for both US goods and services exports, which supported over 931,000 US jobs in 2022. After reaching a record high the year before, US goods exports to China dropped by 4.3 percent in 2023. Services exports to China increased slightly in 2022 but did not recover from COVID-19 travel restrictions.

Meanwhile, after peaking in 2016, Chinese investment into the United States has shown a sustained slowdown since 2017, with Chinese companies facing increased capital restrictions at home and political headwinds and restrictive investment and technology policies in the United States. Annual Chinese investment has dropped from $46 billion in 2016 to less than $500 million in 2022. The operational footprint of Chinese firms in the United States has also been shrinking in recent years. As the prospects of Chinese firms serving as major local employers in the United States dwindle, fewer local officials and businesses are willing to stand up against more restrictive US economic and national security policies towards China.

In this event, we will explore these trends and their impacts, including on US employment, with guest experts Dan Anthony of Trade Partnership Worldwide, author of USCBC’s 2024 Export Report, and Thilo Haneman of Rhodium Group, the partner who leads the firm’s work on global trade and investment.

Thank you to our promotional partners for this event:

  • State International Development Organizations (SIDO)
  • North American Small Business International Trade Educators (NASBITE)
  • Black China Caucus (BCC)

This event is for USCBC member companies and the general public. Registration is required. Please register using your work email. The deadline to register for this program is July 10 at 11:00 AM US ET.
